ELA 11 Student's Section
Welcome to this years College Writing students,
This is the place you should go to when you missed a class, forgot a due date, or want to ask a question about an assignment. If you have specific questions please feel free to email or ask during class! The breakdowns in this section are for my ELA 11 students. ELA 10 students have their own section and should reference that for assignments!
What exactly will I be doing for this class?
This course focuses on world issues through the lens of young adult literature! We will be covering three different topics throughout this semester: mental health, global warming, and immigration. In addition to our topical units, you will be required to recommend two YA books from outside reading per semester.
Our first topic is history. (Topics: fiction, mythology, memoirs: Night, and MLA format/citations) Research Paper about an event in history.
Our second topic is crime. (Topics: laws, Hammurabi's Code, what is crime?, fiction/mystery: Sherlock Holmes, How to stay safe) Write a short story that incorporates elements of a murder mystery (think Clue, nothing graphic). Then go through and create a guide where that character would have lived if they knew these safety tips (You must have at least 3 tips). We will talk about this more in-depth when we start this unit.
Our third topic is civil rights. (Topics: political activism, women's rights, human rights, why are they important) Write a poem about a civil right, the class will create a book of poetry together using those poems.
For your final exam, the class will be voting on a civil right or safety concern and creating a school-wide campaign to share knowledge. Everyone is expected to contribute. Each student will create a poster, jingle, speech, lunch activity, design a display case or a letter to a school official, and to help supervise one of the lunch activities or set up a display case.
