Hello students, parents and any other readers,

My name is Ms. Schoon and I will be your teacher, your child's teacher or someone who's page you just happen to be looking at this year! I can't wait to meet all of you and get started! My classes are discussion based so participation will be a big part of your grade! If you are going to be absent please let me know ahead of time if possible. Incoming students Some common questions about me you may want to know the answer to are:

What do you do for fun?

Contrary to popular belief, I do not live at school! Some of my hobbies include tennis, kayaking, reading, going to the movies and hanging out with friends and family, when I'm not grading papers that is!

What is your favorite book?

I have read so many amazing books and I can't really pick just one. What a book means to you can change over time and the ones you come to cherish you care bout for different reasons. Plus, my current mood affects what I want to read. At this particular moment in time my favorite is Splintered by A.G. Howard.

Do you have any pets?

I have a cat named Liebe. His name is German for love and is pronounced (Lee- Bay). He loves to play fetch with Nerf darts and is our class mascot! I am also looking at getting a dog! Any suggestions?

My Teaching Philosophy

One of the most important things you may need to know about a teacher is what they believe about teaching. This is influenced by our education, past experience, and the mentors we've chosen for ourselves.

For me these beliefs include a few key points. First of all, I believe that education can and should be personalized. Our plans and lessons need to address the needs of our students and in order to do that we need to be flexible. English courses don't exist solely for the purpose of memorizing Shakespeare, English allows us to communicate effectively and to understand people who are different than us. I also believe in life-long learning. The end goal in my classroom isn't to pass a test it is to grow as a student and to become fully educated citizens of society. To those ends, I will equip my students with the tools they need to not only pass their SATs, but to critically assess the world around them and their role in it. Parents are a key part of this learning, and as such are highly encouraged to be active in their students education.
